Bullying and Digital Safety
Our Purpose and Principles
Bullying includes actions that harm, intimidate, or threaten another student or staff member. This may involve:
-
Physical or verbal aggression
-
Written or electronic harassment
-
Sexual harassment
-
Intimidation, retaliation, or threats
-
Hate-motivated behavior
-
Cyberbullying
Cyberbullying includes sending or posting harmful messages, images, or threats using phones, computers, social media, or other digital tools. It also includes breaking into someone’s account or impersonating them online.
We focus on preventing bullying by building a positive, inclusive school climate. Our district:
-
Establishes clear rules and expectations for respectful behavior
-
Educates students about communication, conflict resolution, online safety, and respecting differences
-
Informs students of how to report bullying and the consequences for engaging in it
-
Provides staff training to identify early warning signs and respond effectively
-
Increases supervision in areas where bullying is more likely to occur
-
Works with families, staff, community partners, and student groups to strengthen prevention efforts
Students, families, and staff are encouraged to report bullying right away. Reports can be made to:
-
A teacher
-
The school principal
-
A district administrator or Compliance Officer
-
Any school employee
Reports may be made confidentially or anonymously.
School staff who witness bullying must intervene when safe to do so and must report the incident to the principal within one business day.
The principal will notify the District Compliance Officer within two business days.
Cyberbullying Tip:
Save and print screenshots or messages that document the behavior. Provide these to school staff so the incident can be investigated.
When bullying is reported:
-
The student or parent will be informed of the right to file a formal complaint.
-
The student who experienced bullying may describe what happened, identify witnesses, and provide any evidence.
-
The incident will be investigated promptly.
-
If the bullying is found to be discriminatory, the district will follow its Uniform Complaint Procedures.
-
If not discriminatory, the school will still take all appropriate steps to resolve the issue and support those involved.
Depending on the situation, the district may:
-
Notify parents/guardians of involved students
-
Refer students to counseling, school psychologists, social workers, or restorative programs
-
Coordinate with law enforcement when appropriate
-
Provide support services for victims, witnesses, and those who engaged in bullying
