Temple City, CA – March 19, 2025 – In an inspiring demonstration of dedication and achievement, three students from Temple City High School (TCHS) have been awarded more than $500,000 in scholarships through the Reserve Officers' Training Corps (ROTC) program. These prestigious scholarships, which will cover full tuition at the colleges of their choice, will enable these students to pursue their academic and military ambitions at leading institutions across the country. With dreams of serving their country, pursuing advanced careers in aviation, military strategy, and engineering, these students are already setting the stage for a future filled with leadership, innovation, and service.
Among the awardees is Steven Shi, who has been awarded an astounding $200,000 scholarship through the Navy ROTC program. This scholarship will allow Steven to attend the college of his choice and pursue his ambitions of becoming a naval aviator, flying fighter jets, and eventually becoming a test pilot. Ultimately, Steven dreams of reaching the stars by becoming an astronaut.
A dedicated student with a passion for engineering, Steven plans to double major in Aerospace Engineering and Mechanical Engineering. His interest in aerospace has long been fueled by his involvement in various activities at TCHS. As the Co-Director and Mechanical Lead of TCHS HelioTech, Steven has honed his engineering skills, working on a cutting-edge solar car alongside his peers. He is also a Co-Captain and Builds Director for the TCHS Science Olympiad team, where he continues to push the boundaries of his academic pursuits.
"Being awarded this scholarship is truly a dream come true," said Steven. "The Navy ROTC program will provide me with not only the financial support I need but also the leadership training and discipline that will help me achieve my goals. My favorite class this year is Advanced Systems Design, taught by Mr. David Dicke, where I get to dive deep into the world of engineering and work on real-world design problems. This class, along with my involvement in HelioTech and Science Olympiad, has shaped me into the student and future leader I am today."
Steven's sights are set high as he looks toward attending the U.S. Naval Academy or Stanford University, where he hopes to continue his studies in aerospace and mechanical engineering. His aspirations to become a naval aviator and astronaut are grounded in his passion for flight and his drive to make a significant impact in both the military and space exploration.
Another scholarship recipient is Chaney Gao, who received an impressive $180,000 scholarship from the Naval Reserve Officers Training Corps (NROTC) Scholarship - Marine Option. Like Steven, Chaney has set his sights on the U.S. Naval Academy, with aspirations to major in a STEM field, from Operations Research to Cyberscience. With a strong passion for service, Chaney is determined to follow a path that will lead him to become an Infantry Officer or Ground Intelligence officer, ideally working in the field to make a tangible impact.
For Chaney, the road to ROTC and the U.S. Naval Academy has been paved with hard work, dedication, and sacrifice. From a young age, he knew he wanted to serve his country in some capacity, whether through the military or law enforcement. "Making the decision to commit to the ROTC and apply for the Naval Academy requires focus and dedication," said Chaney. "My goals have always been centered on integrity, honesty, and accountability. This scholarship is a testament to the work I’ve put in, but also to the sacrifices I’ve made along the way."
In addition to his academic and military aspirations, Chaney is an accomplished Division 1 fencer. He has competed internationally, bringing home top 16 finishes in individual events and a gold medal in team events, defeating France’s national team in their own country. Chaney is also a Deputy Explorer with the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department, where he volunteers on weekly ride-alongs, assisting officers and responding to calls in a variety of situations. "My time as a Deputy Explorer has taught me invaluable lessons about service, leadership, and discipline," he shared. "I’ve had the opportunity to work alongside law enforcement officers and learn what it means to serve the community, all while developing the skills that will help me as a future officer in the Navy."
For Chaney, his ROTC scholarship and the opportunities it affords are part of a larger vision to make a difference in the world. "I’ve visualized every day what I’ll be doing in four years: serving as a Marine Officer and impacting the world through uniformed service. This scholarship isn’t just about college; it’s about my lifelong mission to be a hand of hope for my nation and defend those who cannot defend themselves."
Nolan Cao has also earned a prestigious $180,000 scholarship from the Naval Reserve Officers Training Corps (NROTC) Marine Option. Nolan's aspirations are both impressive and grounded in a desire to make a significant impact on the world. Nolan's sights are set on the University of California, Berkeley, with plans to major in Political Science and minor in Economics. Nolan’s academic goals reflect a deep interest in understanding the complexities of government, law, and public policy. His ultimate ambition is to attend law school, a step that will allow him to continue his journey toward influencing the future through legal and political channels. His scholarship provides a vital foundation for these aspirations, ensuring that Nolan will have the resources and support necessary to succeed in his college endeavors.
At TCHS, Nolan has already demonstrated exceptional leadership skills. He runs the Codely Club, an initiative that fosters a passion for coding and technology, providing fellow students with valuable skills for the modern world. Nolan has also tackled one of the most challenging subjects offered at TCHS, Calculus AB, proving his dedication to academic rigor.
“I received invaluable support from my recruiter, Sergeant Sanchez, his mentorship has really helped me on my path.” Nolan shared further, “I am deeply grateful to NROTC leaders Captain Lechnar and Captain Arroyo, as they have been instrumental in guiding me toward this incredible opportunity and believing in me.” With their help, Nolan is now on a clear and focused path that will help him grow not only as a scholar but also as a future leader in the military and beyond. Nolan Cao is poised to become a force for good—both in the courtroom and in the service of his country.
As Temple City High School continues to cultivate the next generation of leaders, these students serve as shining examples of what can be achieved through passion, hard work, and a commitment to a greater purpose. Their journeys are only just beginning, and with the ROTC scholarships now in hand, there is no doubt they will continue to soar to new heights in their academic and military careers.
