California Content Standards (CCS)

California Common Core State Standards: English Language Arts & Literacy in History/Social Studies, Science, and Technical Subjectswere adopted in August 2010 and are the culmination of an extended, broad-based effort to create the next generation of standards from kindergarten through grade 12 to help ensure all students are literate at college and career ready levels no later than the end of high school.

California English Language Development Standards were adopted by the State Board of Education in November 2012.  They amplify the California State Standards for English Language Arts and Literacy in History/Social Studies, Science, and Technical Subjects (ELA/Literacy).

The CA ELD Standards support English learners to use English purposefully. They support English learners to use language to interact meaningfully in school and beyond. They also support English learners to be knowledgeable about English and utilize language as a resource for communicating and learning.

The Common Core State Standards for Mathematics were adopted in 2010 by the State Board of Education.  They define the knowledge, concepts, and skills students should acquire at grade or course level.

The Next Generation Science Standards for California Public Schools, K–12 were adopted by the State Board of Education in 2013 and cover grades Kindergarten through Grade Twelve.  With the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS), there are three distinct and equally important dimensions to learning science.  These dimensions are combined to form each standard or performance expectation.  Each of these dimensions work with the other two to help students build a cohesive understanding of science over time.  The K-12 learning sequences focuses on phenomena-based teaching and learning. 

World Language

The California World Languages Standards for Public Schools, Kindergarten Through Grade Twelve (WL Standards) were approved by the State Board of Education (SBE) in January of 2019. These new standards support California’s vision that every student develop intercultural competence and become global citizens able to effectively navigate the international marketplace; interact meaningfully across cultures; and succeed in business, research, and inter- national relations.

 

 

Social Science

The History–Social Science Content Standards for California Public Schools, Kindergarten Through Grade Twelve was adopted by the California State Board of Education in October 1998. Since then, the History–Social Science Framework for California Public Schools, Kindergarten Through Grade Twelve, a companion to the History-Social Science standards, was adopted by the State Board of Education in July 2016. This document places a focus on student inquiry, consistent with the other recently adopted core content areas.
