3) Teaching Philosophy:
My pedagogical purpose of teaching is to reach out to students in giving them knowledge of Chinese history and culture, but most importantly expose them to the Mandarin language. I want them to feel the pride of learning another language, just as I do with learning English, and would like to help them realize the importance of it in regards to gaining a better job in the future as well. I also hope to help them overcome any struggles they are having by sharing tough experiences I had when living in Taiwan as far as feeling different from others or having a language barrier. Most of all, I want to help my students understand and believe that they are all competent individuals that can do whatever they set their minds to.
As far as helping students learn to the best of their ability, I believe in preparing a very well thought-out curriculum and providing as much visual aids as possible to help them understand what they are learning. I think setting high standards of what is expected of them, is key also. However, I do not believe in overwhelming a student with too much expectation either; all I would require of them is that they put their very best foot forward and try their hardest. I would also try to give each student as much assistance they need, especially the ones who are struggling, and give them the tools that can help them meet their goals in learning. I would want all of them to reach their highest potential, and would help them achieve this by teaching them how to have strong work ethics as far as studying hard and learning good study habits in the classroom or at home.
I firmly believe that a student-teacher relationship should be based on trust and a mutual understanding. I would make every effort to assure my students that they don't have to go though their problems alone, and risk hurting their academic career by slacking off or cheating. I would make it clear to them that I would be there to support them in any way I can and as patiently as possible, and treat them in a caring way. In retrospect, I would expect the students to give me the same respect I show them, and would not allow any rude language talking back in my presence.
The content knowledge I have of my particular field of interest will help me to equip my students with all the essentials they will need in learning Mandarin. It will also bring a sense of satisfaction to them in learning new things about another country, and will widen their horizons. Their eyes will be opened to a whole new way of life, and they will have a better under-standing of how others in the world survive and look at things. Also, as a teacher, I'm sure that I will learn the value of molding impressionable young minds in a positive way, and feel the sense of pride in doing so.
