Reading Screening

Kindergarten - Grade 2 Reading Difficulty Risk Screener Information

Senate Bill 114 requires that beginning in the 25/26 school year, all students will be screened for reading difficulties including profiles related to Dyslexia. This initiative aims to identify and support students early, ensuring they have the support they need in reading.

In December 2024, California released a list of four approved screeners. Temple City formed a Reading Difficulties Risk Screener(RDRS) Panel in January 2025 consisting of dedicated certificated teachers and site administrators, the Director of SPED, and caregivers from each elementary school to evaluate these options utilizing the Adoption Toolkit provided by the state.

Pilots of mCLASS DIBELS and AMIRA, two of the California State approved screeners, will happened in May 2025 with an official decision for which program to adopt in June.

Following the pilots, the RDRS Panel will make a decision and the curriculum coordinator will make a recommendation to the Board of Education in June. Pending approval, implementation is set to start in the 25/26 school year. Screening windows for each grade level are still to be determined. Training will take place for all K-2 teachers.
